Dear Eric - Bag Bother

Dear Eric — I play at a busy park where people usually leave bags outside the fence. I’m worried about theft so I keep my bag on court. Someone gave me grief, what should I do?

Short answer: You’re protecting your stuff, fine, but a little diplomacy makes everyone happier.

Why people object: Leaving bags off‑court reduces clutter and trip hazards. Courts get crowded, and people don’t want bags in foot traffic.

A simple fix in three steps

  1. Explain briefly: “I keep a small bag on court because I’ve had stuff go missing. I’ll tuck it out of the way.” Most folks will understand once you say it calmly.

  2. Be considerate: use a compact bag, keep it zipped, and place it in a corner or under a bench so it’s out of traffic. Visible, tidy, and low‑profile goes a long way.

  3. Offer a compromise: suggest a small “safe zone” at the fence edge or volunteer to watch a shared stash for a rotation. Ask the court captain to set a simple guideline.

If it’s still an issue

Use a cable lock or leave valuables at home.

Check with park staff about lockers.

Stay polite but firm if someone pushes you, safety beats social pressure.

Bottom line: protect your stuff, be unobtrusive, and communicate briefly. Most players want friendly courts, and a little courtesy turns tense moments back into rallies.
