Tip to Win More Games... Hit Less Winners
Fewer hero shots. More victories.
At our local open play, I’ve been partnered with George several times lately. His game has really improved because he’s hitting fewer winners. And by winners I mean those hard shots that are just as likely to go into the net or out, as they are to end the point.
It's easy to get caught up in the thrill of trying to hit that perfect winner. Many players fall into the trap of attempting to win points with aggressive shots, often leading to frustrating errors. The reality is that in pickleball, not every shot is an opportunity to go for the glory. Instead of striving for the dramatic, take advantage of the benefits of a more strategic and patient approach to winning points.
The core of effective pickleball play lies in creating opportunities rather than forcing them. When you find yourself in a position where you’re trying to hit a winner but the setup isn’t right, it’s often a recipe for disappointment. Rather than swinging for the fences, focus on hitting a safer, yet still challenging shot that puts pressure on your opponent. This might mean hitting another boring (but safe) dink, or simply keeping your opponents back with a deep ball at their feet. By strategically placing your shots, you can dictate the pace of the game and force your opponent into a defensive position.
Think of each rally as a chess match. Instead of going for the immediate win, consider your shots like pieces on a chessboard, moving strategically to set up for the next play. By maintaining a consistent and controlled style, you not only minimize your unforced errors but also create openings for easier put-away shots later in the point.
As you dial back the urge to always go for the hard-hitting winner, you’ll likely notice that your overall gameplay improves. The beauty of pickleball is its finesse; often, the player who can keep their cool and play smart will outlast those who rely solely on power.
The next time you’re on the court, remind yourself that winning points doesn’t always mean making spectacular shots. Embrace a mindset focused on control, strategy, and placement. As you play safer shots that keep your opponent guessing, you’ll inevitably set yourself up for those satisfying moments when you do get to put one away. So, step back, play smart, and watch your game evolve as you become a more patient and strategic player on the pickleball court.
