Improving Your Drop: Timing Matters

Better timing, better drops, better wins

To improve your drop in pickleball, whether it’s the third or fifth or seventh shot, one crucial aspect to focus on is hitting the ball after it reaches the apex of its bounce. This timing can make all the difference in the effectiveness of your shot.

When you wait and strike the ball after it peaks, you gain better control and accuracy. This will allow your ball to drop into the kitchen at the ideal angle, making it more challenging for your opponents to attack. By utilizing the natural downward momentum of the ball, you can execute a softer drop shot that lands over the net and in the kitchen and creates a difficult position for your rivals.

Conversely, hitting the ball too early, before it reaches its highest point, can lead to problems. Shots taken during the rising motion tend to float high over the net, giving your opponents an easy opportunity to set up an aggressive return. This not only increases the likelihood of making errors but also puts you at a disadvantage in the rally.

To practice hitting after the apex, consider these tips:

Watch the Ball: As you prepare for the incoming shot, track its trajectory closely. Anticipate when it will reach its peak and start to decline, and be ready to time your swing accordingly.

Position Yourself: Ensure you're in a balanced stance, feet shoulder-width apart, and knees slightly bent. This positioning allows you to remain steady and ready to strike once the ball has passed its highest point.

Focus on Touch: When you make contact after the apex, aim for a smooth follow-through. This will enhance your touch and help you deliver a controlled drop shot that stays low in the kitchen.

By emphasizing the importance of hitting the ball after the apex, you can master this critical technique and elevate your performance on the court. Practice this timing, and you’ll find your third shot drop becoming a powerful asset in your gameplay.
