How to Get Better at Pickleball While Playing at Open Play

Turn every casual game into a built-in training session

We ran a survey last week and two things popped out. The vast majority of you fine readers mostly play during Open Play…and also want to improve your game as you play. With a nod to Montell Jordan “This is how we do it”... Open Play is a great place to sharpen your skills without the pressure of a scheduled match or even a tournament, and with a few intentional moves, you can make every game a mini-training session.

1. Play with Different Partners
Your typical partner is great, but challenge yourself to switch things up. Playing with different skill levels forces you to adapt, whether it’s adjusting your shot selection, working on your dinks, or tightening your body awareness. Besides, it’s the fastest way to learn new tactics and see how others master tricky shots like spins or drop volleys. Every partner has a unique skill or a perspective that can help elevate your game.

2. Focus on Shot Variety
We often stick to our comfort zone, drives, long dink exchanges, the same safe serves. But Open Play is perfect for experimenting! Practice your drop shots, surprise your opponents with a well-placed lob, or try a new spin serve. Just today I was experimenting with serving with a western grip (paddle facing down on the forehand), and it did help with topspin. Push yourself to incorporate at least one new shot or strategy each session. Remember, every great player was once a beginner trying new things.

3. Sharpen Your Kitchen Game
Use Open Play to refine your kitchen exchanges, quick reactions, and placement. Watch the best players, ask for tips, or just practice mixing up your dinks, both soft and aggressive, wide and middle.

4. Analyze & Adjust
After each session, take a mental note (or quick jot) about what worked well and what didn’t. Did you struggle with returning fast cross-court shots? Were your volleys inconsistent? Setting small, achievable goals like “hit three confident dinks” or “stay more balanced with a stable base at the kitchen” can help you improve steadily. Use each game as a mini-lesson.

5. Stay Calm and Focused
Don’t try to win every point at the risk of becoming tense and sacrificing control. Instead, keep a steady, relaxed mindset. Focus on consistency, placement, and keeping your energy up. Play with purpose, and the points will follow.

6. Have Fun and Keep It Light
Remember, even as you level up, the core of Open Play is enjoying the game and building camaraderie. Keeping things fun and friendly helps you stay motivated to keep practicing and experimenting.

The Bottom Line:
Open Play is your playground for growth, use it to push your boundaries, refine your shots, and build confidence. Play with and against different partners, experiment with new strategies, and always stay relaxed and focused. Leveling up is a journey, and every rally is a step forward. Paddle on, and enjoy the process!
