Ghosted! From WTF to LFG*
Turning that “left on read” into “let’s go, find new games.”
I usually play pickleball with Joyce, it’s something we enjoy together and we’re a pretty good team. But recently I’d been playing a bunch with Brendan and things were clicking. We’d meet some of the guys and have great games. Then…ghosted. No texts returned, didn’t see him at the courts. Nada.
Ever happen to you? At first, you’re probably left scratching your head. Was it something you said? Did they forget? Or maybe they just got caught up in life? Whatever the reason, that sudden silence hits differently, especially when it’s someone you genuinely enjoyed spending time with on the court.
So, what should you do when you get ghosted? Here are four tips to help you move forward:
1. Acknowledge Your Feelings
It’s okay to feel disappointed, confused, or even a little hurt. Ghosting can feel like rejection, and that’s tough. Give yourself permission to feel those emotions. Recognize them, express them in healthy ways, and remind yourself that it’s normal and temporary.
2. Don’t Overanalyze
It’s tempting to replay every rally or message in your head, wondering what went wrong. But chances are, it’s more about their own situation than your game. Instead, shift focus forward. Keep showing up, stay confident, and remember, there are plenty of players eager to rally with you.
3. Practice Self-Compassion
Be kind to yourself. Avoid blame or negative self-talk. Talk to yourself with the same patience and kindness you’d offer a friend. Engage in fun activities outside the court and remember: your worth isn’t tied to one partner or one game.
4. Look Forward to New Opportunities
The court is full of new players each day. Don’t let one ghosting experience block you from new rallies. Keep trying, keep smiling, and stay open to meeting new friends who are ready to have fun and play hard.
Remember, in pickleball, and in life, sometimes people need to take a step back, and that’s okay. Keep your paddle up, your spirits high, and your eyes open for the next rally. The court is waiting, and your best games are still ahead.
