Feeling Nervous on the Pickleball Court? Here’s How to Keep Calm and Play Your Best!

Quiet the jitters, elevate your game

Here’s the scenario, you’ve finally been asked to play on the “big girl” (or boy) court. Your game has improved, but you’re nervous as heck! That’s normal, almost everyone gets butterflies when they step up for a competitive pickleball game. Whether you're new to the sport or a seasoned pro, nerves are part of the game. But the good news? You can learn to manage them and actually enjoy the ride!

Trust me, I’ve been there. I have a good friend who’s a lot better than me, and the first few times I’ve played with him, my nerves got the better of me.  Here are a few tricks to keep your nerves from taking over your whole game.

1. Slow Down Between Points

The first tip? Take a breath and slow down. When you’re nervous, your brain might be racing a mile a minute, and that’s when mistakes happen. Instead of rushing to serve or even receive, give yourself 15 seconds to compose yourself. I’ll even stick my paddle up in the air as I walk back to receive serve, signaling I’m not ready. Once I settle myself, and align myself with the server, I’ll lower my paddle and they can serve.

Pickleball is all about momentum, and dwelling on a tough shot or a missed point will only kill your mojo. So, if you fumble a serve or miss a dink, don’t dwell. Reset, breathe, and focus on the next point. Remember, it’s just a game, stay in the moment and keep your head clear.

2. Stick to Your Fundamentals

When nerves hit, it’s common to tighten up or rush your shots. But staying true to your basics can save your game. Keep your paddle control smooth, follow through on your ground strokes, punchy at the kitchen, and stay balanced. I have a mantra “middle of the court”. Reminding myself to hit makeable shots that are in the court, vs going for the lines and spraying the ball out.

3. Commit to Every Shot

Nerves can make you second-guess every move. Don’t give in! Once you’ve decided on a shot, whether it’s a drop shot, lob, or drive, commit fully. Be confident in your choice and follow through with purpose.

Second-guessing only adds to the nervous energy, and you’ll end up swinging wildly or hesitating. Instead, visualize your shot beforehand and go for it. Even if your opponent is rushing towards the net, trust your decision. Full commitment is what turns a tentative shot into a winner or at least a safe return.

4. Keep Your Energy Up

This might sound cheesy, but staying energized and positive can turn nervousness into fighting spirit. Celebrate small wins, cheer yourself on, and keep moving between points. The more you stay active and upbeat, the less room nerves have to creep in.

Plus, a loud “Let’s go!” or a few fist pumps can shake off tension and get your adrenaline flowing. It also can mess with your opponent, everyone’s nervous sometimes, and showing that you’re ready to fight for every point can rattle them a bit too.

In Summary…

Feeling nervous? That’s normal! Use these four tips to manage those jitters:

  • Slow down between points

  • Stick to your fundamentals

  • Commit fully to each shot

  • Keep your energy positive and high

Now go out there, enjoy the game, and remember, nerves are just part of the fun!
