Dear Eric: They Keep Calling My Balls Out… What Do I Do?

In the pros they call this “hooking”. It sounds like you’ve found yourself in a not-so-fun situation where your perfectly legal shots are getting unfairly labeled “out.” Trust me, it can be as frustrating as missing that game-winning shot right at the net!

First, remember, you’re here for fun! Politely address the situation by asking your fellow players to confirm their calls. You might say something like, “Hey, I thought that ball was on the line, are you sure?” It’s all about communication and ensuring everyone feels comfortable during the game.

If they confirm the call, shrug it off, it’s part of the game…the first time. If this continues, ask them again to confirm the call. Remind them that the rule book is clear, if both of their players don’t absolutely agree on the call, the doubt goes to your side.

Lastly, if the calls keep happening, finish the game and then make a mental note not to play with them again. This is supposed to be fun, and people who cheat are never fun to play against.

Remember, the spirit of pickleball is all about enjoying the game, so keep having fun and let the good times roll!
