Countering Speed Ups: How to thrive, not just survive
In a recent game my opponent sped up a ball at me and I was ready and immediately hit the ball back at their shoulder for a winner. It felt amazing. No matter how much I tell myself to be ready, I often get caught by surprise! At the intermediate level, it seems like players try to speed up as often as they can. Learning how to effectively counter these shots is essential for any player looking to level up their game. Here are some strategies to help you handle speed-ups like a pro!
1. Anticipate and Position Yourself
The first step in countering speed-ups is to develop the ability to anticipate when they are coming. As the game progresses, pay attention to your opponent's stance and swing and backswing motions. If they are leaning forward and preparing to attack, or if they take a bigger backswing than regularly for a dink, be ready to respond. Make it a habit to position yourself in a balanced, athletic stance, or as we like to say, a stable base. Have your paddle up at upper belly to chest height, and practice paddle tracking the ball.
2. Focus on Timing
Timing is crucial when countering speed-ups. Often, players panic and try to swing too hard in an attempt to keep up with the pace, leading to mistakes. Instead, prioritize timing your shots effectively. When you see a speed-up coming, take a deep breath and prepare to meet the ball where it will naturally go. A short punch or a controlled volley, rather than trying to match the opponent's power, is a good play here.
3. Practice Your Reaction Time
Developing quick reflexes is essential for countering speed-ups. Incorporate drills that focus on improving your reaction time, such as partner volleys or quick exchanges at the net. Practicing under pressure will enable you to become more comfortable when confronting fast-paced balls during actual matches. Play a game of skinny singles with a partner and start at the kitchen line. After the ball goes over the net 3 times, it’s a live game with the goal of either speeding the ball up, or countering the speed up.
By incorporating these strategies into your game, you’ll be better equipped to handle speed-ups from your opponents. Remember: anticipation, timing, and practice are key elements to countering aggressive shots effectively. As you build your skills and confidence, you'll not only improve your gameplay but have more fun!
