A Question for Dear Eric (the Dear Abby of Pickleball)

We received an email from someone I’ll call “Bruce” and I’m taking a stab at “Dear Abby” in my reply…here’ goes.

Dear Eric,

I recently found myself bumped from the next game during Open Play in favor of what was a “ladies game.” Is this kosher? How should I have reacted?

Dear Bruce,

Thank you for your question! What a pickle you've found yourself in during your recent pickleball session. Let’s break it down: you were set to play when the lineup shifted to accommodate an all-ladies game. While it can feel frustrating to be sidelined, whether this is bad form really depends on the dynamics of your group.

In open play environments, the emphasis is on inclusivity and allowing everyone a chance to compete, regardless of gender. When a player decides to alter the line-up without clear communication, it can give the impression that some players are prioritized over others, which isn’t in the spirit of friendly competition. That said, sometimes these things happen, and no one is perfect!

So, how should you have reacted? It’s natural to feel a bit taken aback, but maintaining a positive attitude can make all the difference. Instead of becoming frustrated, consider gently approaching the person or group who made the decision. A lighthearted comment like, “I see you’re going with an all-ladies game! I’ll keep an eye out for a men's game,” can keep things friendly and show that you’re game for whatever fun comes your way. This encourages open dialogue about fair play without causing tension. Or if this is a one-off, probably best to just let it slide and join the next game.

If this kind of switch happens frequently in your group, it might be worth discussing it the next time everyone is gathered. Bringing up the topic of maintaining balance and inclusivity ensures that all players feel welcome, valued, and ready to engage in the sport we all love.

In conclusion, remember that pickleball is about enjoying the game, fostering community, and sometimes navigating unexpected bumps in play. The next time you find yourself in a similar situation, take a deep breath, approach the matter with good humor, and keep hitting those balls. Whether you're playing with the ladies or the guys, it’s all about having fun and making memories on the court!

Warm regards,

Dear Eric  (Dear Abby of Pickleball)
